The Hygrophila Araguaia Plant is an attractive aquatic plant that produces gorgeous elongated lance-shaped leaves that give an elegant and graceful appearance. The Hygrophila Araguaia Plant is an interesting stem plant as it can adopt both an upright AND creeping growth habit making it a fantastically versatile plant. When grown upright, the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant takes on a very stately appearance adding a sleek vertical element that naturally draws the eye upwards. When regularly pruned or grown as a creeping plant, the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant takes on a bushy, shrub-like appearance. Depending on the size of your aquarium or your aquarium landscape design, the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant can be employed as a foreground, midground, or background plant to beautiful effect. The leaves of the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant is somewhat tender and susceptible to damage so be sure to avoid rambunctious tankmates.

In addition to its attractive architectural form, the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant boasts lovely foliage coloration that can range from a vibrant lime green to a deeper green coloration with brassy overtones. Under ideal conditions, the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant may take on a purple reddish-brown coloration with bronze overtones. Interestingly, though the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant is named after the Araguaia River in Brazil, it originates far away from South America. The Hygrophila Araguaia Plant has been identified as Hygrophila lancea from Japan and Hong Kong by Dieter Wasshausen of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

In the home aquarium, the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant can be easily propagated by cuttings. Simply cut or trim the main (mother) plant at the height that you desire, making sure to take account for new growth, then strip the leaves off of the cutting to expose about an inch of the stem and finally plant the cutting into the gravel. In time, roots will form at the last node and will aid in keeping the plant in place.

The Hygrophila Araguaia Plant does well when provided full spectrum (5000°K-7000°K) lighting of high intensity. Though typically a moderately slow-growing plant, under ideal growing conditions with CO2 supplementation and balanced fertilization, the Hygrophila Araguaia Plant will demonstrate faster growth.
